We use ghostscript in a solaris environment for customer documentation etc.
It's a 'just works' kinda software, in my experience.

i don't know about solaris specifically, but the ghostscript stuff
should be portable to solaris; i usually use 'ps2pdf' to take ps files
and convert them to pdf.... but you can do other pdf and postscript
related stuff with these packages as well.
not sure if there's a package on the freeware site or not.
