Hi Will,
 there is a open source out there ( I think I got it from unixhq.org).
The Programm is called xine and is capable of playing mpeg1, 2, and divx.
But you will need a special plugin to run DVD's.
Also hardware requirements are high ( 2*300 Mhz or sth like that)
