for intel, you have to boot either from the cdrom or
the floppy, and at the place where it offers you the
two choices
1) interactive install
2) custom jumpstart
chooose >

type in:    b -s

not 1 or 2

that will start a cdrom load single user.
after that it the normal mount and fix the shadow file
etc.
