The file size limitation for 2.6 is 1TB. 
2.5/2.5.1's limitation is 2GB.

Are you filling up the slice(partition) as you're attempting to tar? 

FYI - Solaris 2.6 has a patch for tar (Patch-ID# 105792-06 -- x86
Patch-ID# 105793)

I personally use GNU tar - basically because I sometimes do incremental
tars.
