To my (limited) knowledge: No.=20
The fall-back to OBP monitor mode is caused by a hardware issue -
some serial status line (don't remember exactly which) is going
to zero voltage. You can catch this by using a pull-up resistor,
there are documents on the web how to do this (IIRC even in sunsolve)

Steffen, even _open_ serial ports sometimes behave strangely
