this is a vauge, quick summary overview kinda thing. you can configure your
average SNMP agent to watch far more than just network activity. i have been
using mrtg to monitor everything from network activity to disk to swap usage
to io/sec to anything i can conceive of. there is no limit.
that's the whole point of SNMP.
i highly recommend mrtg. it's an excellent tool. although if you want to do
crazy stuff with it (lots of machines, or much processing or whatever) you would
do well to get RRD Tool http://ee-staff.ethz.ch/~oetiker/webtools/rrdtool/ and
put mrtg on top of that.
