[SunHELP] problem setting PATH under solaris 8

PATH=/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/ccs/bin:/usr/ucb:/usr/local/bin:/etc:/usr/ccs/lib:.
export PATH
MANPATH=/usr/man:/usr/local/man
export MANPATH
it just doesn't seem to be peicking it up :(
/.profile is owned by root.
