[SunHELP] root unknown & STOP-A disabled

Hope this is obvious to someone...

Help would be very much appreciated.

I have inherited an old Ultra5 on which I do not know the root password.

I need to get in as root to rebuild the machine for my lab.

I had thought I would boot from the install CD, mount the regular root
partition & then edit the root partition shadow file direct.

Unfortunately I cannot get to the ok prompt to do the boot - It seems STOP-A
has been disabled.

I only get the tty console if I attach a terminal emulator (on my laptop)
direct to the tty (using a cross-over cable).

As I cannot get the console on a telnet session on my terminal server I have
not been able to do a "send brk".

I have tried disconnecting my serial cable for a second or more (to effect a
break as instructed by old postings) but this doesn't work either.

Any ideas?
