Could it be that gcc is not in the default path for bourne shell?

CC=/path/to/gcc ./configure ....

Look at the bottom of the "config.log" file. This is the file where the
configure command logs the output of it's run. You'll probably find a
more detailed complaint in there as to why it doesnt seem to like you gcc
installation.
