[SunHELP] missing parent directory

This is about the strangest problem I've ever encountered.  Having
problems in a particular mounted file system where anything that tries to
do a getcwd fails:  this includes man, df, and many others.

Here's a look at the culprit filesystem:
rage:/m05/$ ls -la
./..: Permission denied
total 0
drwxr-xr-x   4 root     root          96 May 22 21:42 .
drwxr-xr-x   2 root     root          96 May 23 11:01 lost+found

anyone catch it?  maybe comparison against a different mounted filesystem
will show:
rage:/m04/$ ls -la
total 6
drwxr-xr-x   4 root     root          96 Mar 22 22:08 .
drwxr-xr-x  33 root     root        1024 May 31 19:21 ..
drwxr-xr-x   2 root     root          96 May  4 20:24 lost+found

the ./.. permission denied is curious, so here's a look at /:
