ok, that sucked.  so i reset it and got it to the ok prompt and found this

i've seen that phase thing enough times to know that we don't have correct
termination.  probably the esp's autoterminator isn't working right.  that
of course is a complete guess, since i haven't been unable to check, since now
it hangs during POST and i can't break into the ROM Monitor.
