I've had nothing but problems with helix, and personally I prefer
windowmaker anyhow. A windowmaker howto:
Install packages
Log into system
Choose OpenWindows for your UI
WindowMaker will start automatically

If you check the Gnome website they'll recommend you use the
HelixCode/Ximian installer. You can automatically download all the
rpms/tars/packages and the installer then it should do everything for
you.

I've just done it on a linux box and it was relatively painless, the
only
fiddling needed was some xdm/gdm configuration.
