because the manufacturer can get away with selling it for that much. the
market is driven by the demand and the willingness to pay. large corporations
and internet startup companies need terabytes upon terabytes of memory for
SUN computers, and they need it NOW. they are willing to pay what is 10x
reasonable, just so they can have the memory immediately.
this is the one sad truth about Sun and their machines. the part i can't figure
out is why aren't they doing better from a business standpoint?
