have you check the cabling ? And setting your COM port to 9600,8,n,1 ?
And do not forget to unplug the keyboard to use ttya as the console.

SS5, SS10, and SS20 are sun4m family, you can run Solaris 8 above them
SS1, SS1+, SS2, IPC are sun4c, only can be installed with Solaris 7
