Is it possible that the /var filesystem is mounted read-only?  In the past,
I've seen this to be the case after an unexpected reboot, etc.  

This console message usually indicates that init cannot write to /var. And
it's generally because the fs is mounted read-only. This happens if there is
a brief power outage, etc and the system believes filesystems are mounted,
when in fact they are not. You can remount the filesystem with something
like:

# mount -o rw,remount /
then hit CTRL-D

If that fails, try fsck on the filesystem.

Has anyone ever seen this error before?
I'm getting this error after applying the recommended patches from SunSolve
to an x86 machine.  It also says "Cannot create /var/adm/utmp or
/var/adm/utmpx"  is there anything I can do about this?
