Like half and quarter inch tapes, the 8mm denotes the tape width.
You'll find 4mm for DAT tapes which are 3.8something in reality :)

Look at www.exabyte.com for a description of the many recording 
densities and tape types available.

BTW: 160m (run length) isn't Mammoth, it's XL.
Mammoth tapes are 170m in length.
