[Sunhelp] 670MP OS choices

Martin,

Yes, 2.5.1 is the last "supported" version where everything (i.e. VME
works). Here's a pointer to one site that shows how to install later
versions of Solaris on a 4/6xx:

http://lios.apana.org.au/~cdewick/data/sunos_6x0.html

I've done it, and it works. The hassle is having to have a boot installer
set up, though I admit that's not a big process. Be careful when applying
patches, since that can whack the modified routine and get you a
non-bootable system. . .

I've seen better explanations than the above page, but this should get you
going in the right direction.

Steve

Am I correct in the understanding that 2.5.1 was the last official
solaris release that supports the 670MP without 'hacking' the installer?
I also recall seeing a post showing how to eliminate the hardware checking
routine to allow a higher version to be loaded, but without VME support.
I want to load the latest version possible before I move my mail and other
services to it and let it do its' thing.
Would someone be so kind as to refresh my memory?

p.s. I'm a big fan of *BSD, but since this is a SMP box.... Yes I know it
will run linux, which I like on my x86 laptop, but it's just not for me on
this old SUN ware. When in Rome....

Thanks!
