How are you running it from cron?

elude [8] % crontab -l | g datetest
* * * * * /usr/home/petef/datetest.sh > /usr/home/petef/datetest.out
elude [9] % cat datetest.out
test_06/10/2000_15:43.log
elude [10] % sh /usr/home/petef/datetest.sh
test_06/10/2000_15:44.log
elude [11] %
