Thanks for your advice. It was my error, as the "src" dir prohibited other
and world read and execute. Once I changed that all went well. Thanks.

The ownership is your issue. Do a 'chown -R nobody:nobody' on the patch
tree and try again. The checkinstall script actully runs as user nobody
during the installation, and if it's unable to read any patch contents
(perhaps due to being owned by root and not world-readable), it will bomb
out like that.
