This is what I have from another group on background images.  Looks like the
xv is the way to go...

Using xview, place in your startup files somewhere or on an alias for easy
access:
	xv -root imagefilename -quit
XV will then place the image on your root shell and exit.  It understands
many popular file formats in COLOR.
for complete docs laid out like a website, in a tar.gz
file go to:   http://www.trilon.com/xv/ <http://www.trilon.com/xv/> 
Im using it right now with a JPEG and it works great.

xsetroot is conventional.
If you want pictures on your background then various things available on the
net do it better - xloadimage is good.
