[Sunhelp] Ls -l ???

Hi All,
Please dont "rtfm" me since i've done that allready ...
when you do an ls -l on a direcory the first line states total n
best i could find is that total stands for "amount of storage used by the
files in this directory"
but what does that mean storage ? inodes,clusters,entries in the directory
inode ?
