[Sunhelp] unable to boot from cdrom

If 'stop:a' lets you boot from cdrom, one of the possible solutions is
that someone has been messing with /etc/inittab.  Have a look at that
file when you boot from cd-rom, and make sure that the initdefault field
is not set to init 6.  

However, that is only 1 possible solution.
