First, thanks to all the many people who took the time to reply to my plea 
for assistance. Hopefully I can return the favour at some later date.

Second. The general consensus appears to be to forget auto-negotiation
altogether and use /etc/system settings to set the network interfaces 
speed/duplex 
to a known state. I now have documents from both Cisco and Sun which further
confirm that piece of advice.

Needless to say, as soon as I can get time on the box I will be setting these
parameters.
