Absolutely correct.

(Of course, much of the credit probably goes to the fact that it's
Unix and not Windows, but that's ok.)

For mkisofs, you'll want to use the -J flag to enable Joliet (for
Windows), and either -r or -R to enable the Rock Ridge extensions (for
Unix.)  If all you care about is filenames, -r is probably right.
Read the man page.  There is no problem with enabling Joliet AND Rock
Ridge at the same time.

There is also a package out there called mkhybrid that is basically
just like mkisofs, but adds Macintosh support to the mix.  I'm not
sure, but it's functionality may have been incorporated into the
latest mkisofs.
