[Sunhelp] messing with tapes

I have a tape that I need software off of, but I need to put this software
on a U5 that does not have scsi (f#@!@#!! Sun).  Would I use dd to remove
the contents?  I don't know what format the data is in on the tape.  I
previously used the install utility on a SunOS4x box.  I am planning to
put Sol 2.6 on the U5.  Any ideas?
