I've probably messed things up here.

Better listen to Magnus, he seems to have even better experience from
RAID 0+1/1+0 :-)
(I only use 'clean' RAID-1 or RAID-3/5)

for a small explanation.
Also check http://www.twincom.com/raid.html and
http://www.whatis.com/raid.htm for a more complete explanation, although
(almost) missing the 0+1 part.
