I'm surpised that you found Networker 'hokey', I used it in my previous job
and it seemed okay. All right, the general opinion was that while it was a 
breeze
to setup, it could definitely do with some usablility enhancements in the
client side. However, it was good if you had a variety of backup devices 
splattered
around.

On the other hand, if you've just got one central server, preferably with a 
robotic tape 
library, have you had a look at the Tivoli Storage Manager product?

It doesn't support the multiple-tape-drives-around-the-enterprise system that 
Networker
does. Nevertheless, I've found it very easy to setup and pretty easy to control 
and monitor.
Third party support's pretty good too, (various training agencies and mailing 
lists available).
Trouble is like all IBM products (??) to get the best out of it you probably 
need to add some of
the optional modules, (like the Disaster Recovery Manager).

If you do try this, two recommendations:
1. Get training - it's a complex product and training makes it so much easier 
in the long run,
especially if there's a lot of clients.
2. Get an IBM consultant to do the initial install - and make sure that they 
tune it. It's not tricky
to install, but a knowledable consultant can make the difference between 
running and running well.
