I'm not sure I understand your question, but here's a brief explanation.
The box currently has a le0 interface on a 10Mb-only segment, which goes
upstream to an internet firewall/news feed. It currently has a le1
interface on a 10/100Mb switched segment, which goes downstream to a bunch
of hungry workstations for which it provides file, print, and news service.
Very unbalanced traffic. I am replacing the le1 interface with an hme0 to
better feed the chicks.
As to why it had a 10Mb card in it in the first place, you'd have to ask the
person who set it up. My guess would be that it predated the 10/100 switch.
Make sense? If I misunderstood your question please restate/clarify.
