[Sunhelp] control audio gain programically?

As a way to learn perl and my sparc10 I'm writing a little mp3 'jukebox.'
One of the features I'd like to have is the ability to control the audio
gain (volume) through a program, instead of handling the control in
audiocontrol manually.

It would be nice to associate volume levels with, say, different times of
the day, cgi input or rules for individual songs or music directories. Or
even remote control -- X10?

Is such a thing possible, and where should I look to find out how to do it?
