All the suggestions for using grep are fine until you end up
with a LOT of email. Right now an exhaustive search of the archives
here takes almost an hour on a SS10 / 150 Hypersparc.

You might investigate WAIS and its more recent progeny. I've recently
put a WAIS dataset of my email up and it is extremely fast. There
are a lot of new developments but I haven't gotten around to dealing
with any of them yet.
