If you want IP aliasing, then use the network interface with :1 added, (or :2,
:3, etc)
To get the situation below, I did
ifconfig hme1:1 210.100.2.8
ifconfig hme1:1 up
hme0: flags=863<UP,BROADCAST,NOTRAILERS,RUNNING,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
inet 111.222.2.4 netmask ffffff00 broadcast 111.222.2.255
ether 8:0:20:9b:8:1
hme1: flags=863<UP,BROADCAST,NOTRAILERS,RUNNING,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
inet 111.222.2.9 netmask ffffff00 broadcast 111.222.2.255
ether 8:0:20:9b:8:1
hme1:1: flags=843<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
inet 111.222.2.8 netmask ffffff00 broadcast 111.222.2.255
