man Xsun.  Look for the "xinerama" section.

Note that both heads must support an identical bpp and height for them to
be merged.  In other words, if your U5 is an early model and only supports
8bpp through the onboard video, you can only generate an 8bpp composite
screen even if other framebuffers support higher depths.
