The easiest solution for you would to be to use icq or something. All
windows machines can use it, and sun can of course run the Java versions.
Same with AOL instant messanger, there are java versions of both. And if
you box can't run java 1.2 with solaris 2.6 & > .. You have more serious
issues :)
