Sounds like it went into the WebStart install straight off the DVD 
media. With CD-ROM media for Solaris 8, you can do an "old style" 
lightweight GUI install by booting from OS disc 1 rather than the 
"Installation" CD.

There should be a way to specify at the OpenBoot prompt in the "boot 
cdrom" command that you want the text or lightweight GUI install.
