I don't think this answers your question, but pressing PAUSE & PAGE-UP will 
zoom in and give you a *much* magnified screen, which you can then pan across.
PAUSE & PAGE-DOWN to disable.

If you install fvwm, that provides a larger virtual desktop, but I'm not
sure if there is a way of doing this with the stock window manager X
combination.

I didn't realize it was also on a menu.  ;-)

PAUSE-O will initial a suspend from the keyboard.
