[SPARCbook] Re: new parts list soon - About these CDs ??

Well, I'd say you are partially right - these OSs could be installed on a
SPARCbook (not sure models/families) without FTPing a lot of stuff, but then
you would be missing security/performance enhancements created since these
CDs were "cut" (the most recent one is probably over two years old by now).

If you want to run older SunOS 4.1 or Solaris 2.5, this could be a good
deal,
but many folks want (as a minimum) Solaris 2.6 for numerous reasons, and NCE
is not available for Solaris 2.6 over the web, and maybe not at all (I don't
remember
off the top of my head).

SPARCbook 2 is not Y2K compliant, but that does not mean it is not usable -
it
is just so far femoved from a useful corporate machine (it is essentially a
Sun IPX
with a 8" or 9" 640x480 color display and a battery) that $200 may be a bit
high.
Low-end SS5/70s and SS5/85s can be had for about the same money (and
weigh about the same too, I'd guess!), but SS5s are *far* from portable
workstations.

HTH,

Ken

one could buy it for playing with / experimenting. Does it only run Sun OS
or can Solaris be used? (any of the above CD distributions?) It says on the
Tadpole homepages that its not Y2K compliant. Does this mean it will be dead
or that some features that uses the clock and date will not work or will
work if the date / time is reset?
