[SPARCbook] resume failure

If I understand the FAQ correctly, I should do a reset and then as the
machine is booting back up, when I see the giant sparcbook banner, I
should press pause-a. This causes a prompt to appear immediately after
the banner is gone. Here I type "create no-resume?" (complete with
question mark) and then boot disk following that.
I've tried several variants of boot disk and also pause-a at several
different times during the banner display
on a side note, I just tried this procedure on my 3gx and it worked fine.
I can't seem to make it work on the 3gs (it belongs to a friend). Any
ideas what I'm doing wrong on the 3gs?
thanks
