[SPARCbook] 170 pcmcia disk

can anyone tell me how to get fdisk, or at least newfs/mkfs to work with
the 170mb pcmcia disk?  I can format it with pcfs and mount it just fine
but I cannot seem to get format, fdisk, newfs, or mkfs to work with the
drive under solaris 2.6

I have also tried fdformat with no luck.  All utilities recognize the
presence of the disk but all have trouble with it.  I'd like to use some
other file system because, quite frankly, 8.3 char pcfs sucks badly
