I prefer screen over minicom for simplicity.  I just do:
screen /dev/ttyS0 115200
Now, I pretty much never need to use kermit or y-modem anymore for sending
data to embedded devices.

I would often run minicom in screen and using screen directly is certainly
simpler than that.

Overall though, I canbt say that using screen adds any features or new
capabilities, it just simplifies things.
