[rescue] Sun Netra 240 w/ 48V Power Supplies- How much current do I need to run it?

Hello Peter,

Good question, but, not sure that I have a good answer.

sharing the relevant parts of the experience, the employer in question pushed a lot of data thru those boxes, and they were almost
always maxing out disk based I/O.

I saw a staggering number of both drives, and SCSI based components replaced in those V240's. Although your comment makes perfect
sense to me, back in the day when these were relevant, a countless number of maintenance windows were forced to be extended by
another couple of hours as Sun FE's went to swap out ROHS parts for non-ROHS parts, or vis-versa. For what ever it was worth, Sun
felt that the ROHS vs non-ROHS parts could not be intermingled.

And I will close repeating my earlier comment, hopefully this is null & void for this particular discussion, regarding V240 power
supplies. hopefully it is just a heads up to the OP to be mindful of, in case he wants to upgrade, or swap out dead components in
the future.

Jerry

Hi Jerry

Not sure where the ROHS compliance makes a difference, I thought this was
related to the manufacture process, not the functionality of the parts?

I.e. The non ROHS will do the same job, given it is the same functional spec.

FWIW, back when these were still in production, or, at least still
supported, I was working for a large retailer, and we had ~50 of
them on the 'web tier', in support of the online catalog, web sales, etc.

Apparently, many of the 240's were put out during a transitional time, and I
can't count the number of times that Sun went back for
the right part, when they were out for repair. Specifically, some boxes
were ROHS compliant (that we owned), and others weren't.

For the purpose of this discussion, I do NOT believe that power supplies
ever played into that, but, it seems that every time I pick
up a new SPARC system, its always my plan to max out memory, CPU, etc.
Assuming that others do the same. Food for thought.

Jerry

Hi

Just a quick thing to check the main fans which were a hot item requested
for
spares. They used to be expensive items.

I picked up a Sun Netra 240 at U of M surplus for a whopping 5 dollars.

However to run it, I need to supply it with 48v power. It came out
of a telco central office. Any idea how big of PSU i need to run it?

Thanks
