It absolutely was.  Our higher up command had initially pushed for 100Mb 
Ethernet for our backbone, and we fought (proverbially) tooth-n-nail to stop 
that and go with FDDI.

The FDDI backbone worked extremely well during its service time.  As I was 
preparing to separate from the Military (I spent my last 5 years at Laughlin), 
the battle was brewing to put in/replace the FDDI backbone with an ATM backbone. 
  Left to return to the real world before I saw the remainder of that battle.

But to jump into obscure, and from roughly the same time period, does anyone 
remember HP's 100VG anylan technology?
