Although FreeBSD can boot from a raidz (I think), it seems like a bad 
choice to me unless the hardware is so constrained in terms of physical 
space that neither a pair of small form factor SSDs, nor a USB stick or 
SD card will fit inside to serve as root devices.  Mixing data and 
root/boot in a single pool should be avoided if possible.
