GNOME 2 was forked to create MatC). MatC) is now moving to Gtk 3 and may
move closer to GNOME 3 as a result -- at least sharing accessory apps.

Cinnamon is based on GNOME 3, Gtk 3 and Mutter.

There are no other  GNOME 2 forks AFAIK. There are several other
projects based in some part on GNOME 3 -- Ubuntu Unity, SolusOS
Budgie, Elementary, and the now-dead Consort.
