I was at the big shindig at Intel HQ when they sprang it on the world. 
I remember comparing it to the CDC 6600, which it much resembled in 
certain respects.

It all sprang fully-formed into the public eye, but they told me this 
was because the original customer (presumably a government) hadn't 
exercised their option to keep it private.
