One thing that has started disturbing me in Linux deskops in recent
years is sheer complexity. I chose Linux desktop in about 1995 because
of its simplicty - I can unerstand Unix, I can understand the X11
userland, I can debug my way through most of the problems.

Now, the complexity of desktop solutions has gone up a lot. It's not
just systemd that adds layers on debuggability - there were components
before that while doing some good, complicated things on the other side:
polkit, dbus, udev, upstart as some examples of the bigger problems.

As the result, Linux is more and more like a black box - it is possible
to understand any specific path through it but it is more and more time
consuming and less practical than before.
