It could have turned out a little worse; some interesting technology
was jettisoned before Sun got sucked into the Oracle black hole.
DTrace and ZFS are in good health and widely used, for example.  And
in some sense, open source Solaris can only die from lack of people
willing to keep it going.  I've been told that OpenIndiana on SPARC is
showing faint signs of life.

But, yeah, once Oracle milks the last drop of support cash from the
companies rich enough to pay and slow enough to delay migration from
Solaris, it will be officially buried; thus completing the
homogenization of the Unix world into Linux running on x86 hardware.
