The core problem is that SPARCs were, and are, expensive.  I dug up a 
couple press releases with pricing from 2000.

Intel Celeron
766 MHz: $170
733 MHz: $112

UltraSPARC IIe
500 MHz: $357
400 MHz: $230

This is probably the closest that SPARC and x86 ever got in price.
