i was fascinated to read that after sun had moved on to sparcv9,
someone came up with a totally-open inplementation of the v8
architecture - i think there was an aerospace [nasa?] connection
somewhere.  and also interesting is that when the design was
published/released, they said a gate array implementation could run at
400MHz.

ah, the march of progress...

was mips always open?  or did that come about after the collapse of
mips workstations and their realignment into the embedded market?
sparc was iirc always open.
