<minor pedant alert>
For BSD its the partition with the kernel (and boot loader unless you
are particularly baroque), which is usually the root filesystem but
can be otherwise - for example if you have a pair of disks and want to
have a RAID1 root filesystem larger than 1G :)
Mmmmm software RAID on a VAX...
