I've had much more success than failure on eBay sourced RAM over the
last 5 or so years, especially when dealing with older registered/ecc
ram (built out a lot of dl145 g1/g2 machines, and recently got a
couple of dual opterons with ddr1 ecc reg that needed more ram).
There are a lot of reputable sellers who use ebay as an alternate
venue, and a lot of reputable sellers who only sell on eBay. Check
their return policy and recent feedback (especially on similar items)
and you should be okay.
And fwiw, DDR2 and DDR3 will not be intercompatible even if they're
the same level of buffering/registration.
